Weil das Leben eine einzige, lebensgroße Verheißung ist, ist es gelegentlich durchaus unterhaltsam, sich auf eine kleine Reise zu begeben. Italien im Februar ... warum nicht? Man ist vor den Schrecken des Tourismus bewahrt – und konstatiert mit Freude, dass die Künstliche Intelligenz, welche die Planung übernommen hat, ausgerechnet jenes römische Hotel gebucht hat, das ein ferner Vorfahr im frühen 16. Jahrhundert dort errichtet hat – ein Detail, das meinen adelssüchtigen Vater mit Entzücken erfüllt hätte, umsomehr, als il Burckardo, der als Zeremonienmeister des Heiligen Stuhles wirkte, der Nachwelt ein Wappen hinterlassen hat. Und ungeachtet der Tatsache, dass die Antica Dimora Delle Cinque Lune das ungewöhnlichste Hotel ist, in dem ich jemals genächtigt habe – man kann es jedem Rom-Reisenden nur empfehlen. Und weil die Räume (wie vielleicht ganz Rom überhaupt) eine großartige Filmkulisse für Hopkins und mich dargestellt haben – haben wir den Aufenthalt dort für eine kleine Video-Episode genutzt, die als Teil einer Gesprächsserie zur Frage des Geldes und der Aufmerksamkeitsökonomie auf ex nihilo erscheinen wird.
Überhaupt – Film. Weil Substack in den letzten Jahren sich auch als Plattform für Videos hervorgetan hat, haben wir uns in einen 2800-Seelensprengel in den Süden der Toskana begeben: Castiglion Fibocchi, wo eine wahrhaft ungewöhnliche Karnevalsfeier stattfindet, die weniger mit der Ausgelassenheit linksrheinischer Jecken als vielmehr mit einer ernsten, katholischen Prozession gemein hat. Natürlich regt das die Aufmerksamkeit und das anthropologische Interesse an – und so sieht man sich, nach einem Gespräch mit dem Karnevalspräsidenten, in einer barocken Phantasiewelt wieder, die geradezu danach verlangt, gefilmt zu werden. Und so wird in den nächsten Tagen auf ex nihilo eine Dokumentation zu diesem Spektakel erscheinen – was ein Prototyp für künftige Exkursionen, vielleicht auch das Modell für ein Videotagebuch sein mag.
Dies ist vielleicht ein Punkt, wo man den Entwicklern von Substack ein großes, großes Kompliment aussprechen kann. Die Schritte, welche die Plattform in den letzten Jahren gemacht hat, verraten nicht nur, dass hier Autoren die Interessen von Autoren vertreten, sie lassen auch den Blick auf ein neuartiges, zukunftsweisendes Publikationsmodell zu. Für mich, der ich mich vor langer Zeit schon, halb im Scherz, halb ernst gemeint, als elektrischer Autor bezeichnet habe, ist das ein großartiges Unterfangen. Denn nun kann der Autor, je nachdem, ob er sich akustisch, visuell, textlich oder in interaktiver Form äußern möchte, die jeweils ideale Kommunikationsform wählen.
Mir, der ich mir ex nihilo als ein Resozialisierungsprogramm verordnet habe, das mich aus meiner mönchischen Schreib-Einsamkeit herausholt, ist Substack jedenfalls zu einem geradezu idealen Publikationsort geworden. Dass man hier, unbehelligt von den clickbait-Aufdringlichkeiten des Internets, einem Text, einem Hörstück oder einem Video jenen Raum geben kann, den es verdient, ist ein Geschenk – so wie die Gespräche mit anregenden Zeitgenossen ein wahres Vergnügen darstellen. Und ihnen wollen wir danken, ebenso wie unseren Lesern, die uns mit Vorschlägen und Anregungen überraschen – etwas, was uns durchaus willkommen ist.
Because life is one big, life-size promise, occasionally it can be quite entertaining to go on a little trip. Italy in February—why not? You’re spared the horrors of tourism – and pleased to discover how the artificial intelligence that’s taken charge of planning has booked the very Roman hotel that a distant ancestor built in the early 16th century – a detail that would have delighted my father, who was addicted to nobility, all the more so because il Burcardo, who worked as a master of ceremonies for the Holy See, left a coat of arms for posterity. And even though the Antica Dimora Delle Cinque Lune is the most unusual hotel I’ve ever stayed in, it comes highly recommended to anyone traveling to Rome. And because the rooms (like perhaps all of Rome) provided a great film set for Hopkins and me – we used our stay there for a small video episode, which will appear as part of a series of conversations on the question of money and the Attention Economy on ex nihilo.
Speaking of the film: because Substack has also emerged as a plat form for videos in recent years, we went to a parish of 2800 in southern Tuscany: Castiglion Fibocchi, where a truly unusual carnival celebration takes place, which has less in common with the exuberance of carnival revellers than with a serious Catholic procession. Of course, this attracts attention and anthropological interest – and so, after a conversation with the carnival president, you find yourself in a baroque fantasy world that almost begs to be filmed. And so, in the next few days, a documentary about this spectacle will appear ex nihilo – which may be a prototype for future excursions and perhaps even the model for a video diary.
This is perhaps the point at which the developers of Substack should be given a big compliment. The steps this platform’s authors have taken in recent years reveal not only that they represent the author’s interests but also provide a glimpse of a new, forward-looking publication model. This is an excellent undertaking for me, who long ago, half in jest, half seriously, referred to myself as an electric author. Now, depending on whether an author wants to express themselves acoustically, visually, textually, or in an interactive form, they can choose the ideal form of communication. And since I’d prescribed ex nihilo to myself as a re-socialization program to get myself out of my monkish writing solitude, Substack has become an ideal place to publish. The fact that you can give a text, an audio piece, or a video the space it deserves here, undisturbed by the clickbait intrusiveness of the internet, is a gift – just as conversations with stimulating contemporaries are an absolute pleasure. And we want to thank them and our readers, who surprise us with suggestions and ideas – something we welcome.
